The highlight of the school year 2006/07 was definitely our diving week in Croatia.Our exact destination was the small town of Beli on the island of Cres. After we started our journey on June 27th, 2007 at 8 am in front of the school, we spent a whopping 12 hours in the bus until we arrived at our destination in Beli.

… Exhausted from the long drive, we finally reached Pension Tramontana, where we stayed for the next week.

Every morning we were woken up sharply at 5 a.m. by the bleating of the sheep. Then we enjoyed our breakfast in the glorious morning sun before starting our long trek to the sea. The way down was still the lesser evil. Finally, in the evening, exhausted from sunbathing and diving, we had to walk all the way uphill. We were always rewarded with a delicious dinner and then we let the days end comfortably with music and fun.

We didn’t just spend the days on the beach relaxing in the sun and cooling off in the sea. We also had two to three dives per day. After all, our goal for this week was to get the diving license. In order to be authorized to dive with a 3 star diver or higher certified diver, we had to complete the basic course. Under the supervision and help of our diving instructors, we successfully learned to master the required tasks. Such tasks would be, for example, blowing out the mask, alternating breathing, rescuing the diving buddy and taking off and putting on the device again. After the exercises we did a normal dive. We saw squid, scorpionfish, sea urchins, starfish and other fascinating underwater creatures.

However, we still had to pass a multiple-choice test to become a 1-star diver. All but one passed this test with flying colors. On the second attempt, however, it still managed to deliver a great performance in the test.

At the end of the week we also had the opportunity to dive in a cave. All who wanted to take this chance were brought to the cave by boat. Of course we were accompanied by our diving instructors. That was exciting and we experienced incredible impressions of the world of marine animals.

Of course we gave it our all again on the last evening. Together with our guides and instructors and guest house owners we played guitar, sang songs, laughed, drank a beer or two and celebrated our dream sports week until the early hours of the morning.

On July 4th, our departure day, we tiredly brought our luggage to the bus and left the deserted city of Beli. It was correspondingly quiet on the drive home after some of us hadn’t gotten enough sleep the previous night. After a ten-hour bus ride, we arrived in Linz enriched by many new experiences, great adventures and unique impressions.

We were accompanied by our class teacher Professor Heilbrunner and Professor Hofinger, who was also one of our diving instructors.
